What is the difference between a Formosan Termite and a Native Subterranean Termite?
Night and day. Formosan Termites are voracious destructive termites that have destroyed entire houses in Hawaii in six months. Native subterraneans in Texas would need more than 10 years to do the same damage. Probably longer.
Reticulitermes or native subterraneans in Texas will eat around 17 lbs of lumber in a year.
Formosan Termites can eat as much as 1000 pounds of lumber in a year!
A typical subterranean termite colony will have around 100,000 colony members.
A formosan termite colony will have as many as 1 Million colony members.
Formosan Termites are not larger in size, but they have very aggressive behaviors. I have put my finger where Formosan Soldiers have been crawling and they will literally bite my finger and hold on. They will attack anything that disrupts their shelter tubes. Formosan Termites will exude a white puss like material and they are typically heartier against extreme elements.
So, if you live in Hawaii or certain parts of Houston, Galveston and Austin and you are dealing with Formosan Termites, you definitely need excellent professional help. Find an entomologist and let them design your method of treatment.
